"Modern Family" Homes

Modern Family is my new favorite show. It's so hilarious but it's also such a loving family centered show. There are some shows I watch, despite them not being very good, just because I love the house (ahem...Cougar Town...cough) but Modern Family is not one of them. It centers around a truly modern family, "one big (straight,gay,multi-cultural, traditional) happy family." Each incredibly funny family has their own style of home and it's so hard to choose a favorite. Jay, the head of the family played by Ed O'Neill, is an architect who lives in a modern style home with his trophy wife Gloria and his step son Manny. His daughter Claire, played by Julie Bowen, and her husband Phil, Ty Burell, live in a traditional family home that is more typical amongst everyday families. I really love it because when I picture my future I see myself in a house that cozy and family oriented. Lastly, the side splitting couple Cameron and Mitchell played by Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. Mitchell is Jay's son and Claire's sister. They lived in a Mediterranean style home with their adopted daughter Lily. Their home is decorated so nicely but I didn't have much luck finding good pictures that show you the home. All the quotes and pictures I did find are courtesy of ABC.

*NOTE* Click on the new tab 'Modern Family' at the top of this page for more info and answers to your questions!

The Dunphy Home:

I would take a shack if it was my own but this simple family home is such a dream of mine to have. I really love the other houses in the show as well but this home feels the most realistic to attain for the average girl like me.

You can see the entrance and a bit of the living room here. I really like the fresh colours and beachy feel the room has. The basket full of throw pillows beside the couch is a fresh take on the typical side table or lamp. The staircase actually reminds me a lot of the staircase in the 2009 PNE Prize Home which I posted pictures of a few days ago. You can find it here: http://recklessbliss.blogspot.com/2010/01/well-its-been-awhile-since-my-last-post.html. (If anyone knows how to turn the link into an easy one click word please fill me in because I am not computer savvy so I apologize ha ha)

Phil: "That was hardly porn. It was a topless woman on a tractor. You know what they call that in Europe? A cereal commercial."

This is the best view I could find of the bay window in the front of the house. I am Christmas obsessed so the fact that there is a Christmas tree in the bay window makes it that much better to me!

I included this picture because it made my heart feel warm. It's everything I want for me and my husband and our future. Being so Christmas obsessed makes me long for a house of my own and kids to make traditions with. I see myself kicking back with a cup of coffee on Christmas morning like Claire is and soaking in my happy family. Everything about this picture makes me smile!

This is the kitchen area in the Dunphy home. They have a fridge that is made to look like the cabinets which I'm not sure I like. It seems a little too matchy-matchy to me. Plus, you could never have an ice maker or hang pictures or school work on the fridge. I do love the little desk and chair nook on the right. It would be so convenient to have that space for your recipes, cookbooks, lap top etc.

Claire and Phil's bedroom. All the furniture is wood grained with neutral walls and carpet. It's nice but a little bit dull compared to the rest of the home. I think Claire would have decorated it a little more "hip-mom" than this. I would love to see them have a comfy chair or a big pretty mirror somewhere in the room. It looks like they have two dressers, so maybe if they lost one piece of excess furniture and incorporated something a little more cozy it would look better.

I really like the duvet set on the bed, it looks so comfy and cute to slip into at the end of the day. I can't stand it when people block out their window and put their bed in front of it. I understand it if you have no other options layout wise but it just seems absurd to me if you don't have to. The bed would work on any other wall in this room but maybe they had to put it there for the camera angles or something, who knows! The bed frame is really interesting, it would fit in really well in a cabin with some rustic bedding too.
Some of the bed frames on TV shows make me laugh. If you have ever seen Patricia Heaton's new show "The Middle" they have a bed frame that makes you just shake your head in wonder. However, they are staying true to the family and their financial standing. The show is about a middle class family that struggles from pay cheque to pay cheque so it wouldn't be realistic to have a big beautiful brand new bed. This one seems more like something that was given second hand or possibly found at a garage sale. Here is a photo also courtesy ABC:

It seems like a bed you would see in a Florida retirement home ha ha.

Jay and Gloria's Modern Digs:

This home reminds me a lot of the house in the Kevin Costner movie "Mr. Brooks." Coincidentally, he also played an architect in the film so maybe it's a common style amongst people in that career. I really like this house but it feels a little museum-esque or like an office building from the outside looking in, it's very California chic though. Here is the house in Mr. Brooks to compare it to:

A few shots of Jay and Gloria's kitchen. Who doesn't dig a huge fancy fridge? Gotta love that big island too.

Jay to gay son Mitchell about his partner: "You're just mad at the old balls and chain."

A shot of the dining room from in the kitchen.

The living room is full of leather tuft furniture including the walls of the bar in the corner. You can find a very good match to the couch and chair seen in this picture called "Kensington" at Restoration Hardware. Lots of interesting art and patterns in this room as well. I wouldn't think to incorporate the leopard and zebra patterns but they seem to work pretty well in the space. It's a masculine room without feeling cold or sparse which some modern spaces are guilty of.

Beautiful backyard and lit pool at Jay and Gloria's house.

Mitchell and Cameron's Mediterranean Casa:

I really like the vines growing up the house and the door sitting at an angle surrounded by windows.

Mitchell: "I got Luke a video game, but it's about math. So, I guess we're those kind of uncles."

This is basically the only shot I could find of the interior of their home. Pretty much the whole space is done in this muted green/gray on the walls with dark woods for the furniture and hits of colour in the flowers and accessories. I think this home falls somewhere between Claire and Phil's relaxed traditional home and Jay and Gloria's sleek modern home; it's stylish yet cozy. These two guys are so hilarious in the show! You should really check it out if you haven't yet. I love laughing and this show does not disappoint.

So which style of house is your favorite? I love hearing from you guys so please do share! I need to find a picture of Jay and Gloria's bedroom that you get to see in the episode "Coal Digger," it was so gorgeous but I'm still hunting for it. I'll add any photos I find as I come across them because there is a lot more to see including more of Cam and Mitchell's abode so check back every now and then.

I'm so glad I found this blog. I also like the way the homes are decorated. I want to know the finish and color of the Dunphy's kitchen cabinets. I want to paint my kitchen and I am so tired of white kitchen cabinets. Are they painted in golden caramel with a light glaze? I also like the wall and trim colors. Love the blue entry.
I am surprised that Jay's kitchen has contrasting door color- but it works in the mod design.

ABC please publish a guide to the homes of Modern Family!!!

Hi, I have been searching high and low for the couch in the family room (not the living room) of Claire and Phil's house. Any suggestions???

I was sooooo excited to find this website but unfortunately nothing about the couch.

The blue used in the foyer is Labrador Blue by Benjamin Moore.

Hi, great blog. Wondering if you know the name of the curtain fabric in Mitchell and Cam's master bedroom? I absolutely love the colours.

Thanks!
